Theory vs. Facts

"What happens is, theory is replacing facts and the more theory that you make up to explain all the inconsistencies in the facts, makes everybody think that maybe they're true, so that's what they teach."

Bertrand Russell's Wisdom
"The fact that an opinion has been widely held is no evidence whatsoever that it is not utterly absurd; indeed in view of the silliness of the majority of mankind, a widespread belief is more likely to be foolish than sensible."

The Power of Perception
When I was young teenager, I went on a school trip. A girl in my class asked me to write something nice into her friendship book. Being a visually oriented guy, I decided to draw a cat for her, to go with some nice words. I didn't want my room mates to come over and comment on my artwork, while I was still at it. So I decided to write and draw it under my blanket, while they were sleeping.
The only lightsource I had was an old army signal lamp - a flashlight with only to choices: red and green. Since red light gives better contrast and is generally more powerful than green light, I chose red to illuminate my work. In no time I had thought up a few kind words and started to draw a brown cat, using felt pens. Or so I thought...
When the next day I opened the book for a last look before handing it back to the girl, I was shocked to see, my cat wasn't brown at all! I had mistaken the lilac pen for a brown pen.
Obviously I couldn't remove a page from her friendship book, and so she got a perfectly cute, lilac cat. She liked it and liked it even more, when I told her how it came to happen, this cat had such an unusual color. A few months later the girl became my first ever girlfriend.
This little episode taught me at least two lessons.
1. Never underestimate the effects an old army lamp can have on your love life
2. "Perception" is the box we are caught in
